Another day, another made up bullshit holiday. Please make it stop. At the moment I'm looking at the top 10 Twitter trends and there's one in particular that sticks out: #InternationalDayOfHappiness. Do we need a made up holiday to be happy? Here's an idea, just be happy. These made up holidays are not only pointless, but also dilute real holidays and people we should actually be celebrating. Here's a list of dates and holidays that were celebrated during the first 10 days of March:
March 1 - National Peanut Butter Lover’s Day
March 2 - National Banana Cream Pie Day
March 3 - National Cold Cuts Day
March 4 - National Grammar Day
March 5 - National Absinthe Day
March 6 - National Oreo Cookie Day
March 7 - National Pancake Day
March 8 - International Women’s Day
March 9 - National Meatball Day
March 10 - National Pack Your Lunch Day
Sorry ladies I didn't celebrate International Women's Day this year. I was too hungover from eating too many pancakes the day before on International Pancake Day. Not to mention I've only listed one holiday per day. There's actually many more. For example March 8th was not only International Women's Day, but also National Peanut Cluster Day, National Proofreading Day, and National Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day. Wow, looks like the women have some serious competition...I love women, but I also love peanut clusters, which do I choose?
You might be thinking: Andy, why do you care about these pointless made-up holidays? Well, here's why: Because days that matter like Martin Luther King Jr. Day or Veterans Day get lost in the mix. If everyday is a meaningless holiday than the lives of MLK and our military veterans become trivialized. This year Martin Luther King Jr. got to share his holiday with National Fig Newton Day, National Nothing Day, National Religious Freedom Day, and National Without a Scalpel Day.

I feel like the National Day phenomena is similar to the "participation trophy." You get a holiday or trophy just because, you don't have to do anything special to earn it, which to me is a problem. But what do I know? Maybe these made-up national holidays are great for the economy. Which reminds me, today is National Ravioli Day, so I need to stop writing and make dinner reservations at my favorite Italian restaurant.
